5G patent essentiality survey
The paper, co-authored by David Cooper, gives a detailed description of a recent 5G essentiality survey (commissioned by Ericsson) that estimates the proportion of patents declared to ETSI that actually are essential to the 5G smartphone. Compared with the results of a previous 4G survey, the fraction which was already small has fallen further. This matters because manufacturers need accurate knowledge about which patents they should licence. The ETSI database fails to provide this.
